Smoky flavors play super well with tequila. The natural flavors from tequila’s earthy agave notes pair deliciously with smoky notes. It’s no coincidence that this salty, smoky chipotle rim is a match made in heaven for this easy and fruity margarita! It’s super simple to make…
To toss this smoky margarita cocktail rim together on the fly, I used a delicious southwestern smoky chipotle spice blend that I found at the local grocery store.
I use Mesa Rosa’s Smoky Chipotle Spice Blend which is perfect for this fruity margarita on the rocks. It mixes and mingles hints of smoke and salt with every tasty sip… I highly recommend it for fun smoky cocktails just like this!
Make A Smoky Chipotle Sea Salt Cocktail Rim
If you don’t have a bottled chipotle spice blend at home, you can easily make your own by mixing together a 1/2 teaspoon or so of these:
- Chipotle chili pepper powder (the chipotle will really give it a smoky taste)
- Coriander Powder (optional)
- Cumin (also adds smoky kick)
- A little sugar
- A little sea salt
You don’t need a lot, just enough to spread on a plate and dip your glasses in! So just grab a couple good pinches of each, stir and spread out on a plate. It’s super delicious and super hard to mess up, I promise!
The fruit and smoky chipotle rim in this tequila smash both remind me of those Mexican fruit cups you can get from the street vendors in the summer. They come sprinkled with Tajin seasoning or just a simple chili lime salt.

Those Mexican-style seasoned fruit cups are the simplest most deliciously satisfying thing! If you haven’t had one….get one when you get the chance! Sipping this cocktail totally tastes just like it! Tasty ripe strawberries and mango marry so well with tequila!
Make A Smoky Chipotle Cocktail Rim
In a small bowl, combine the chipotle spice mix with a little sea salt and stir. Spread this out onto a small flat plate and start reaching for your cocktail glasses!
If you’re in need of a fun set of marg glasses, you really can’t go wrong with these! They have a gorgeous shape and make a great presentation!
Rim Glasses For Your Strawberry Mango Margarita On The Rocks
Rub the rims of your favorite margarita glasses with a lime wedge and dip into the smoky cocktail rimming salt.
Muddle Fresh Strawberries for your Strawberry Mango Margarita
Muddle fresh strawberries with a muddler until juicy and crushed. You can do this in a cocktail shaker or tall glass.
Spoon the muddled strawberry mixture into your cocktail glass.
Splash In Lime Juice + Simple Syrup + Tequila
Once you’ve added your mashed strawberry, add fresh-squeezed lime juice, simple syrup, and tequila.
I stuck with a nice clean tasting silver tequila for this tasty strawberry mango margarita cocktail. Nothing aged or super fancy. Silver tequila is the best for mixing cocktails because of its young, clean, and simple flavor profile.
Splash In Some Mango Nectar
Lastly, add some ice and splash in some mango nectar. This gives the strawberry margarita such a delicious taste! Now stir everything together. In my opinion, margaritas taste so delicious chilled with ice!
I think margaritas are always best enjoyed on the rocks… You’ll see, for example, that these Prosecco lime margaritas are chilled up with ice cubes too! And this spooky Halloween Witch Potion blackberry margarita is jazzed up with ice and a peppercorn rim as well… Iced is always the way to go!
The chipotle sea salt rim really brings this one home though. Every time you take a sip, you’ll get hints of smokiness from the chipotle and a little saltiness (which tastes soooo good with the lime we squeezed in earlier).
It pairs really well with the sweetness from the fruit and earthy notes of the tequila. Mix up this super easy strawberry mango margarita with mango juice or mango nectar. You can also use agave nectar to sweeten instead of simple syrup. It will complement the tequila in this chilly iced margarita quite nicely!
If you loved this, you might wanna try this refreshing sparkling Paloma cocktail as well! Cheers to keeping the tasty tequila vibes flowing all summer long!
