It’s no secret in the house that I’m basically a big kid when it comes to Halloween. It is my absolute favorite time of the year. You know how a puppy dog sits wagging its tail, patiently waiting by the door for their owner to come home??

Well, that’s basically me waiting all of September for that first week of October to hit on the calendar so I can start dragging all my spooky stuff outta the closet to surround myself in utter Halloween-ey-ness…
Skeletons…witches…oooh and my favorite excuse to re-watch all my favorite vampire movies >> all. over. again. (I love vampire everything…) Plus, it’s an easy excuse to whip up this witchy purple potion margarita to sip while I have my vampy movie marathons… Sorry, I am rambling a tad off the point…
Decorated Spiced Halloween Sugar Cookies Make An Easy Homemade Halloween Treat
But, as you can imagine, when I set out to create a super fun and colorful Halloween treat, I knew I wanted to make a quick and easy sugar cookie with fall spice from scratch. They make perfect little vessels for chocolate-dipping and sprinkling!
Cinnamon Ginger And Clove Spice These Easy Halloween Cookies with Fall Flavor
These easy Halloween cookies are basically made from super simple sugar cookie dough punched up with a little bit of fall spice: cinnamon, ground ginger, clove, and nice hints of vanilla. They are thin, simple (not overly sweet since they get sweet extras on top) and cool down to a nice crispy, buttery bite.
How To make these Easy Halloween Cookies
Pre-heat your oven to 375 degrees F. To start these super simple spiced sugar cookies, make a cookie dough by combining the butter and sugar together in a bowl with an electric mixer. Mix together until everything becomes light and fluffy.
Next, drizzle in some vanilla, a tablespoon of half & half, plus an egg and beat until well combined.
Sift dry ingredients and combine dough
Next, sift all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, ground clove, and ground ginger together into a bowl. With the mixer running on low, add your sifted dry ingredients in a little bit at a time. Mix until everything pulls together into a dough. Form the dough into a chunky flat disc and wrap it in a little plastic wrap and chill in fridge for an hour or so, or until it is cold enough to handle without sticking.
Roll dough and cut the halloween cookie shapes
Dust a rolling pin and working surface with powdered sugar and roll out your chilled cold cookie dough. Keep turning your cookie dough around here and there as you roll to prevent sticking and continue dusting your rolling pin/surface with powdered sugar as needed to prevent sticking.
Roll the dough out to 1/4 inch thickness (working quickly if possible while the dough is cool) and cut out your cookie shapes. I used simple round cutouts, but festive pumpkin, ghost, or witch shapes would be fun to use here as well.
The circle shape keeps the cookie making simple, especially if making Halloween cookies for toddlers or Halloween cookies for kids! The rounds are easy to cut and easy to decorate.
Now at this point, you could certainly call it a day and sprinkle these with sanding sugar or Halloween sprinkles, bake, and eat. I like to take it a little step further and dip the tops in chocolate so I’ll bake them plain first and cool then dip in colorful melted chocolates later on…
Cut out YOur Halloween sprinkle cookies
Once you have your shapes cut out, transfer the cookies to a baking sheet lined with a baking mat using a thin spatula. Bake in a 375 F degree oven until slightly golden around the edges, about 8 to 10 minutes.
When bake time is up, let the cookies cool on the tray for about 5 minutes. Then, using a thin spatula, transfer to a rack to finish cooling before dipping and decorating.
Now you could certainly eat these spiced sugar cookies as is or cover with a little frosting and sprinkle them… Or you could dip in your favorite melted chocolate!
melt some colored chocolate coins for dipping
I like to use meltable chocolate coins or chocolate candy melts. I’ll melt the chocolate in microwave safe bowls in 15 second intervals stirring in between until smooth and melted.
Next, grab a cookie and dip the top side down into the chocolate and immediately after, set back on the rack and dust with festive sprinkles. These Halloween sprinkles are bright, fun, and festive for making your cookies pop! Use a fork to help you lift the cookie back out if necessary.
Decorate Your Halloween Cookies
Alternatively, you might opt to dip a spoon in the melted chocolate and drizzle the cookies, then sprinkle.
I did a little bit of both… Quick tip for the chocolate and sprinkles steps: line your countertop with a little plastic wrap and set the rack(s) on top. I find this catches all the mess from the drippy chocolate and sprinkles. When you’re done just peel the plastic off, bunching it together as you go, and toss. Poof, all clean!
Top your Decorated Halloween Cookies with Sprinkles
Lastly, transfer the cookies to the fridge to let the chocolate coatings set and cool completely. This will help the chocolate + sprinkles and decorations set nicely.
Now you can put out your festive and delicious Halloween spice-sugar cookies for all your ghouls and gals to enjoy! I had lots of fun dipping these easy spice sugar cookies in different color chocolates and mixing up the decorations to keep them bright, bold, and beautiful.
Have fun with the colors. Dip, drizzle, sprinkle, mix it all up! I promise you there is no wrong way to decorate these. There’s only wickedly good fun sprinkling and gobbling up. These are so much fun to put out at a party on a festive decorated Halloween table!
