Plus, after all that holiday cooking and entertaining, who wants to slave over a stove all over again? Just toss these simple ingredients in the instant pot. Push a button and let that soup cook itself while you pour that next cup of coffee, help the kids with homework, let the dog out, or sip that glass of wine you’ve been thinking about.

The other big reason this satisfying winter soup recipe is such a hit? Even though split peas are technically in the bean family, you don’t have to soak them in water overnight (like you do with most bigger dried beans). You can go from package, to pot, to plate without any extra prep from the night before.

  • A medium yellow onion – diced
  • Carrots – peeled and diced
  • Celery – diced
  • Leftover Ham Slices  – diced
  • Bacon – Small diced
  • Ground Onion Powder
  • Garlic Powder
  • Butter
  • Pinches coarse salt + ground pepper to taste
  • Chicken Stock
  • One bag of green Split peas

How To Make Instant Pot Split Pea Soup with Ham

To start this easy instant pot split pea soup with bacon and ham, begin by removing the lid from the instant pot and pushing the sauté button. Once the pot is hot and ready, toss in diced onion, diced celery, diced carrots, and diced bacon.

Stir the vegetables and bacon mixture in sauté mode until bacon has rendered and diced vegetables are tender, about 8 to 10 minutes. When finished, hit cancel to stop sauté mode on the instant pot.

Now you can toss in the diced leftover ham and pour in clean, rinsed split green peas. I used a one pound package of common green split peas from my local grocery store. They come completely dry (not canned or wet) in a plastic package.

Toss in diced leftover ham along with split peas and chicken stock.  Stir and season to taste with salt and pepper

Once you toss in the diced ham and peas, stir to combine with the rest of the ingredients in the pot. Splash in the chicken stock and season to desired taste with coarse salt and cracked pepper.

Sprinkle in the onion powder and garlic powder and give one more gentle stir.

Cover your instant pot securely with the lid and hit the pressure cook button. Cook this easy hearty soup on high pressure for 17 minutes.

When cook time is up, allow soup to release steam on its own, naturally for 15 minutes. Lastly, push the steam release button to release remaining steam. Uncover and stir.
