I used my favorite brand of Twinings orange spice tea and flavored it further by steeping the tea with fresh whole spices. You can use any brand of orange spice tea you have available.

1. Steep Orange Spice Tea

Start off by boiling water for the tea bags. When water comes to a boil, toss in a couple of bags of orange spice tea. Now turn the heat off and let the tea steep for 5 minutes or so, covered.

2. Add whole spices To your fall cocktail with rum

Once the tea has steeped, and the water is nicely infused with the tea, add some whole spices. Remove the tea bags and toss in whole cloves, a few cinnamon sticks, some star anise pods, and a squeeze of fresh orange juice. Add in a dash of ground pumpkin spice. This makes it smell and taste like fall!

3. Add Sweetener & Steep Spices to make a warm spiced tea

Now add granulated sugar or brown sugar (you can also use your favorite honey) to sweeten the mixture and turn the heat back on. I find that the brown sugar is my favorite as it adds a caramel like depth of sweetness to the richly spiced tea that mixes well with the rum.

Over low heat continue to heat everything for another 10 minutes or so until the sugar is melted in and the spices are fragrant and infused into the spiced tea. Right about now your kitchen will start to fill with the amazing spiced scents of fall…

4. Strain the spiced tea And Splash In Golden Rum

Once this is done, strain it and add in golden rum! Pour everything through a strainer to catch the cloves and cinnamon sticks and orange pieces. Now spike it! You can use your favorite brand of light rum, dark rum, or spiced rum. This delicious splash of good rum is what takes it to the max…

Gold rum naturally boasts flavors of cinnamon and big vanilla notes. The splash of rum actually makes this taste like you added vanilla! I used Barcardí gold rum. You could use any gold rum or even spiced rum would be totally amazing!

Tips FOr making This Easy Fall Rum Cocktail

Tipsy Tips:

  • If you don’t have gold rum, try adding brandy, bourbon, or something like Fireball which is a cinnamon-flavored whiskey. (Fireball is a tad sweet on its own, so, go easy on the sweeter if you use it!)
  • If you don’t have orange spice tea, chai tea would do very nicely as well. It also carries warming fall flavors like clove and cinnamon. It would blend nicely with the flavors happening in this wonderful fall cocktail.
  • Add more of each spice if you would like stronger notes to come through. If you want the cinnamon to come through more, pop in two cinnamon sticks. If you want to taste the pumpkin spice more, add a 1/2 or whole tsp instead of a 1/4. Feel free to bump up the flavors you look forward to tasting and play with the recipe/sweetness to your liking.
  • Additionally, you can also leave the spice amounts as is and just steep everything a little longer to concentrate more flavor.

If you love fall drinks with rum as much as I do, try this cinnamon spiced coffee or this delicious Hocus Pocus cocktail with sparkling champagne, orange, and rum! If you’re looking for something vibrant and refreshing, try a lemon rum cocktail, a blueberry lime cocktail, or this new crisp hard cider rum fall cocktail! It’s the perfect refreshing transition cocktail that takes you from summer to fall in a few simple sips…

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Gold Rum - Or more if desired (I used Bacardi Gold Rum)
  • 3 cups Boiling Water
  • 3 to 4 bags Orange Spice Tea - your favorite brand
  • 1 heaping tsp Whole Cloves - whole spice
  • 5 pods Star Anise - whole spice
  • 2 to 3 sticks Cinnamon - whole spice
  • 1/4 tsp Pumpkin Spice - ground spice
  • The Juice of 1/2 An Orange - fresh squeezed
  • 4 tbsp Brown Sugar - or white sugar or honey if desired

Instructions

  • Add water to a saucepan over medium heat. When water begins to boil, remove the pan from the heat and add orange spice tea bags to begin steeping. Let the tea bags steep for 2 to 5 minutes (or according to package directions) in the hot water.
  • Once the steeping time is up, remove tea bags from the water and turn stove off.
  • With the pan still off the heat, add sugar, whole cloves, star anise pods, cinnamon sticks, pumpkin spice, fresh-squeezed orange juice, and a couple of fresh orange slices.
  • Return pan to the stove on low heat this time. Stir everything gently to combine. Let steep over low heat for 10 to 15 more minutes over low heat without coming to a boil. Turn heat off and steep another 5 minutes or so with the cover on.
  • Taste and adjust timing as desired to strengthen the flavor of whole spices in the tea if needed. Taste for sweetness and adjust as needed. Turn heat off and strain the spiced tea.
  • Add gold rum and give it a gentle stir. Serve in small mugs while still hot. Garnish with star anise pods, cinnamon sticks, and dried orange peel.

Notes

-Be sure to add the rum in at the end so that it does not evaporate and cook away into the liquid while it’s on the stove.  Feel free to add more rum to taste if you like. Adjust the sweetness to your liking. This recipe serves about six smaller pours or 4 larger pours.
-If you add in more rum, add in a little bit at a time and remember: you can always add more…but you can’t take any away if it’s too strong.
