An Easy Iced Tea Recipe with Strawberry That You Can Brew In The Sun
Growing up, my aunt used to make sun tea on hot summer days by filling a little glass jug with water and tea bags. She would set it on the back porch outside and let it sit in the sun for a few hours.
Then, slowly, the color would change from clear, to golden, to deep warm amber tones.
The heat of the sun would gently brew the tea inside the jug, releasing its color and flavor. We always had to wait what seemed like (in kid time) an eternity. In standard grown-up time, it’s actually about 1 to 3 hours, depending on how strong you like it!
By the time she poured it, it. tasted. perfect. I can still close my eyes and taste it with nothing more than a squeeze of lemon and a spoonful of sugar and ice.
No bitterness, just the smooth, clear taste of what was most likely a ceylon orange pekoe type tea.

Make this easy Iced Tea Recipe with Strawberries
For this iced tea, I used the same method my aunt did. It lets me get a light, clean, and refreshing tea taste. It’s so simple and so easy, you literally set it down…and forget about it ’til it’s done.
add tea bags and water to a pitcher To make Iced Tea
In a container, (preferably glass) add water and tea bags and set it out in the sun. The heat of the sun will slowly steep the tea. I added about 10 cups of water to this glass pitcher.
I didn’t have the larger pitcher-size tea bags so I just tossed in multiple small açaà berry flavor green tea bags, about 7 to 8 little bags. Some brands (such as Lipton) make larger pouches specifically for this, which is great and easy! Use your favorite brand!
If you don’t have that, you can use any tea (large or small bags) you have a taste for such as oolong tea or ceylon tea.
If you use smaller tea bags, you’ll have to add more of them to get the desired strength/taste, which is what I did. You might use the pitcher-size tea bags, if available. They’re usually bigger so you may only need one. Either way, they all work the same: sun+time=steeped sun tea.

set your iced tea container out in direct sunlight to steep
Once you set your container out in the sun, it will begin to change color showing signs that the heat from the sun is helping it steep. I left mine out and in just 1 hour it steeped pretty well! The timing will vary for everyone depending on how hot that outdoor summer sun is!
Be sure to brew your sun tea on a bright, warm, and sunny day when the direct sunlight can do its job and work to brew your tea with nice deep color!
You can leave yours out for less or more time, depending on how strong you like it. Just taste as you go and decide on the time from there. That’s pretty much it!
Flavor Your iced Tea with Fresh Strawberries
To flavor your tea with fresh strawberry taste, you can either:
- muddle some strawberries and stir them in.
- To make a quick strawberry purée, just add a cup or more of fresh or frozen rough-chopped strawberries to a food processor and purée. Now add a squeeze of lemon or lime juice and add a sweetener such as honey, agave nectar, sugar, or simple syrup. Sweeten to desired taste and serve with the tea.
Serve Easy Iced Tea Recipe With Strawberries
To serve, I like to muddle a strawberry at the bottom of my glass and then squeeze in the juice from a lime wedge. I’ll drizzle a little honey over that and then stir. The honey, the acid from the lime, and the berries will combine and sweeten.
If you don’t wanna do it by the glass, then muddle your strawberries in a tall glass and then add to the whole pitcher, add your lemon/lime juice, then add honey and stir the whole thing up. Muddled fruits will settle at the bottom so just give it a stir every now and then. Use the juices from about a half a lemon/lime for the amount in the pitcher and then sweeten to taste.
I’ll add the ice in last. When the drink is cold, it becomes a little harder for the sugars to melt in, so, that’s why I hold off until the end for that.
Garnish with a little fresh mint and some strawberry slices and enjoy! This refreshing easy iced recipe will quench your summer thirst all season long!
