- 2 Pouches Chai Tea
- 1 1/2 cups Water
- 1/8 tsp Ground Ginger
- 1/8 tsp Ground Cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp Ground Allspice
- 4 whole Cloves
- 2 to 3 tbsp Your Favorite Creamy Milk or Half & Half (or more as desired to taste) for splashing in whether serving cold or hot
- Your favorite loose powder sugar sweetener (such as white sugar, stevia, Splenda, monkfruit sweetener, etc.) for stirring in if serving hot.
- 1 to 2 tbsp Simple Syrup (or more as desired to taste) for stirring in if serving cold over ice.
- Whipped Cream (optional for topping off an iced chai tea)
- 1 Cinnamon Stick (optional for stirring and serving hot or cold).
How To Make This Easy Chai Tea Recipe:
In a small saucepan, bring 1 1/2 cups of water to a simmer.
Once simmering, cut the paper tabs off of two pouches of chai tea. Drop them into the already simmering saucepan of water. I’m using 2 tea bags of Twinnings Chai Tea.
Once the chai tea bags are in, I would recommend not walking away as they’ll only steep for a short time, and if left unattended, will turn the mixture bitter due to the presence of the black tea.
Let the tea bags cook in the low simmering (not boiling) water for one and a half to 2 minutes.
Keep a light simmer, Don’t boil…
Adjust the heat as needed to maintain a light simmer. Boiling the tea pouches harshly will bring out too much bitter flavor from the black tea, so take care to maintain the heat level for a continuous light simmer.
When the simmer time is up, immediately remove Chai tea bags from the water. Do not leave the tea bags in longer because the black tea will now begin to add a bitterness that we don’t want to extract. We just want to extract some of the black tea flavor and the warm spice flavor profile.
To remove tea bags, use tongs to squeeze the bags gently of any excess water and discard from the simmering water.
Add a few extra warming spices to the chai tea recipe mixture
Bring the heat down to low while you add in some extra spices to deepen the chai tea flavor.
With heat on low, add in 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger, 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice, 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and 4 whole cloves.
Simmer to deepen the flavors and the spices…
Bring the water back up to a simmer and continue simmering the chai tea and spices mixture for another 3 to 4 minutes to deepen the flavors. The color of the liquid should be a deep and dark amber brown color now.
Strain and serve chai tea hot or cold
Pour the concentrated spiced chai tea through a fine mesh strainer to remove the whole cloves and any excess sediment from the spices. Strain it into a mason jar with a screw top lid. You can now use this unsweetened concentrated chai tea recipe to make iced chai tea or hot chai tea.
Serve This cozy spiced Chai Tea as Hot Tea:
If serving right away, pour the desired amount (while nice and hot) into your favorite mug or tea cup. Top off the hot chai tea with a tablespoon (or more to taste) of your choice:
- powdered coffee creamer
- half & half
- whole milk or whole ultrafiltered milk such as Fairlife
- or your favorite creamy milk such as vanilla soy milk
- oat milk
- almond milk, cashew milk, or hazelnut milk
Sweeten spiced hot chai tea to taste with:
- simple syrup
- brown sugar
- white sugar
- your favorite plant-based sugar such as stevia
- or a low-calorie keto friendly sweetener such as monk fruit sweetener.
- You can also use this easy homemade vanilla syrup to sweeten your chai tea drink. It’s what I use to sweeten this simple vanilla iced coffee.
Stir together with a cinnamon stick and enjoy while hot.
To Make An Easy Iced Chai Tea:
Chill the strained chai tea and spices mixture in a mason jar with a screw top lid. Let cool completely or leave in the fridge overnight.
Add A Creamer:
Add ice to a tall glass and pour in the desired amount of brewed chai tea. Top off with a creamy milk such as a:
- splash of half & half
- whole milk
- your favorite creamy milk such as vanilla soy milk
- oat milk
- almond milk
- I’m using Fairlife whole ultra-filtered milk.
Add A Sweetener To Your Iced Chai Tea:
To sweeten the cold iced chai tea, add 1 to 2 tablespoons of simple syrup (or sweeten to taste). Alternatively, you can sweeten with your favorite low calorie sweetener such as Splenda, stevia, or monkfruit sweetener. A vanilla syrup such as Torani vanilla syrup can also be used to sweeten this easy iced chai tea mixture.
Alternatively, you might choose a sweetened creamer such as vanilla coffee creamer for your iced chai tea. This will add cream and sweetness at the same time.
Be decadent and finish with a twirl of whipped cream on top plus another light dusting of cinnamon.

You can use a milk frother to whip a bit of warm milk and create frothy foamy milk. Top the hot chai tea with the foamy milk and stir in your favorite sweetener and sweeten to taste. Dust with a bit of cinnamon and enjoy hot as a latte. It’s quite good with frothy vanilla soy milk as well.
