Benefits of Butterfly Pea Flower Powder
This is one of my favorite ingredients to sprinkle into an easy healthy smoothie recipe. Butterfly pea flower has known benefits that aid in everything from hair, skin, and nails to improving sleep, and aiding anxiety, stress, and depression. In addition to all that, it carries rich antioxidant properties that add to the already-existing antioxidant boosts you’ll receive from the cherries and blueberries too.
What is Butterfly Pea Flower Powder?
The dusty purple-blue flower powder itself is derived from the Clitoria Ternatea flower which is native to Southeast Asia. It’s an evergreen climbing perennial with stunning purple flowers that are harvested into the purple flower powder. They are also harvested as whole dry flowers for teas and other drinks. The powder adds a beautiful shade of indigo-blue to violet coloring in cocktails or smoothies. The intensity of the color will depend on how much you add. When combined with citric acid, the ph levels in the butterfly pea flower change, turning the colors to shades of magenta and pink.
Make a Butterfly Pea Flower Smoothie with Mango and Cherry
make the mango smoothie layer…
To make this delicious, fruity layered smoothie, start by making the mango layer! Add chunks of mango (I used frozen mango) to the blender. Add a dash of honey and a good splash of coconut water plus ice. Blend all ingredients together and set aside in a separate container.
make the purple butterfly pea flower smoothie layer…
Toss cherries in the blender (I used a pitted frozen cherry mix) along with blueberries (fresh or frozen).
Add a cup of loosely packed fresh baby spinach plus a drizzle of honey. Now sprinkle in the tablespoon of butterfly pea flower powder. Top that off with another splash of coconut water plus ice.
Serve your Butterfly Pea Flower recipe Smoothie
To serve our mango cherry smoothie, simply pour it up in layers alternating between splashes of the mango smoothie mix and the cherry butterfly pea mix. The layers will sit a little nicer on top of each other if the mixture is a tad thicker and less on the runny side. Adjust your ratio of fruit/ice/liquids as needed to keep the preferred consistency as you pour.
Serve Nice and Cold
Garnish with a few extra skewered cherries and some crushed rose petals over the top, if desired. It’s so much fun to take a spoon and gently swirl the colors together in your glass as you sip…
Serve this energy-giving antioxidant-rich smoothie any time you need a boost of nutrients. It is truly a restorative smoothie with healthy and hydrating benefits that will set you right as rain!
